Rule 2016-4-1 Spell Change to know
(Draft) By Ed Scholz
Chance
to know rules do not work: So as long as the casters spell list is
less than than minimum number of spells, the caster may remove as
many spells from the can not know spell list as their new current
level up to the min mum number on any list, but rolling until they
run out of tries equal to their level or they have tried each spell
once. For example a 3rd level character has failed to learn 3 first
level spells and one 2nd level spell. They can remove 3 spells from
their "can not know list" but in the case of the first
level spells they are only one spell from having the minimum so they
can only
remove one of the spells form the list, but can try all
three if the fist spell fails a re-roll. The 2nd level spell has only
one attempt to remove that one spell. The total number of tries can
not exceed 3, their current level.
Additionally,
every time their intelligence rises they can make the same attempts
for all unknown spells less than their minimum number of spells,
based on their current level (minimum of one.)
Finally,
a magic user can invent any spell on his unknown list as usual as
long as his minimum number of spells has not been filled for that
level. So even if a magic user can not no longer go up levels they
can try to discover the formula from base principles as if it was a
new spell. A magic user trying to make a copy of the same spell that
they do not understand will otherwise generally fail unless the spell
is significantly different, usually another school - for example a
sleep spell that works by summoning a monster that can put the target
to sleep.
