2nd Edition bard:
Test Phase: The Degenerate Theurgist
& The Degenerate Trickster
theurgist. a magician who persuades or compels a supernatural being to do or refrain from doing something. — theurgy, n. — theurgic, theurgical, adj.
Failed Magic User: The Degenerate Theurgist
A failed magic user ("Degenerate Theurgist",) is a magic user some where early in his training, around first level lost his spell book and/or his master. They have received basic magic user training but found it not wise to continue without access to any spells . . . and radically changed their class. Some might actually be the students of a bad magic user master, or even a master Degenerate Theuragist, who can teach minor magics (at least 4th level, usually 6th) as if they where a proper scholar. However, most of these Degenerate Mages are too busy just trying to survive than train others. A Degenerate Theurgist ("user of black magic") will occasion teach a real magic user if they gain access to a spell book. While unable to teach them past 1st level it is possible for somone with extreme talent to learn proper, but limited magic from such a class.
Like the 2nd edition bard the
Degenerate Theurgist is considered a sub class of theif unless they take certain kits, then they are considered a sub class of magic user after they reach 4th or 6th level, effectively changing class.
The Degenerate Theurgist can never cast magic in armour (without special magic items of course) except elven chain, but learns basic armour and weapons, had the d6 for hit points, and has the potential for spell power.
Even if they gain access to spells they have only access to one school of magic for ever 2 levels, unless they they gain proper magic user from a expert magic user. A magic user can teach them one extra school a level in addition to the one every two levels they gain - plus their starting school. The schools all start as minor schools first, and they can gain greater scrolls (spells above 4th) as another school - though generally they do not need this. A scroll that is both two high level for them to cast and from an alien scroll has twice the failure chances - but otherwise with a read magic (or their natural ablity) they can use scrolls normally as long as it is either low level, or in a school they understand.
They use the 2nd edition template, and if they are Failed magic user warriors, they fight as clerics but most of the bards abilities of counter song, influence or even thief capabilities. They do however gain the basic theif ablilits that 2nd edition bards gain but they do not progress.
However they do gain the advantage of being able to master (that is use as a magic user) one magic user only item per level, that does not need actual spells.
They can, if acquiring a magic item allowing them to read magic, or find a long form book, acquire spells as a bard, but they lost their spell book sometime ago. They may instead, at any level not finding a magic item to master, ad 5% chance to read languages, eventually allowing the reading of magic scorlls. At 10th level they only gain 1% read languages ablity if they forgo the magic item. If two magic items of a similar type are learned, then a class of magic item can be taken next level (so 2 wands that deal with fire, then at third fire magic staves could be taken, or fire magic wands, or fire magic wands.) Every two levels a general class of magic item duplicating existing spells may also be taken.
In stead of read languages, they can take a use magic percentage, which allows them to use items generally outside their class. Note read langauges, when it allows scrl use.
At another option, they take read read magic spells at double the percentage gained. This allows to them to read only a read magic scroll or from a spell book without any aid, if the percentage is made. However while a roll can be used just to identify the scroll, the roll must be made when actually intending to use it, and if failed it will destroy the scroll, and in some cases, the spell from a spell book - and sometimes the entire book.
Up to third level they can "come back" to their original class buy slowly losing the powers of this class (or if strong enough, just dual class)
