It does appear he was of the moneyed class: -he may also have been related to Hieron, King of Syracuse, and his son Gelon (1) -he was the son of an astronomer, a profession that could be just for curiosity, though he may have been paid by patron, sailors or a religious order (for important dates and such.)

Works

Tended to refer to real world mechanics, but where in theoretical in nature. Plutarch dismissed his skills, do to his non theoretical approaches (one presumes seen more of a mechanic than a philosopher.)

List of some:
-Method Concerning Mechanical Theorems
- On the Sphere and Cylinder (in two books)
-Measurement of the Circle is a fragment of a longer work
-Quadrature of the Parabola
-The Sand-Reckoner is a small treatise that is a jeu d’esprit written for the layman (deals with the problems of expressing large numbers)
